Harry Potter Papercraft: Hedwig

I have been reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The book has me thinking about Harry Potter's owl, Hedwig. "Transplaner," a DIY Harry Potter blog offers this Hedwig paper model which was designed by Jeanne, the blog's author. The template for the model and instruction photographs may be found here. Hedwig is a female snowy owl, a species that is native to the artic regions of North America.

Easy Miniature Schnauzer Papercraft

Here's an easy dog papercraft of a Miniature Schnauzer. The American Kennel Club, describes this breed of dog as:

"Created to be all-around farm dogs and ratters, they are tough, muscular, and fearless without being aggressive. The Miniature Schnauzer is a bright, friendly, trainable companion, small enough to adapt to apartment life but tireless enough to patrol acres of farmland. They get along well with other animals and kids. Minis are sturdy little guys and enjoy vigorous play. Home and family oriented, they make great watchdogs."

Fortnite Loot Llama Papercraft

In the "Battle Royale" mode of the Fortnite video game, there are five loot llamas placed randomly on the map. Loot llamas (aka supply llamas) function like treasure chests do in other games: open or destroy a llama and the items inside will be dropped for the player's use. This paper model of a loot llama was created by Paperttore at Paperled. The template download for the model is available at Mega.nz. Both PDF and Pepakura PDO template formats are available.

Alaskan Malamute Puppy Papercraft

The Malamute was originally bred to pull dog sleds in Alaska. It is very strong and has great endurance. This paper model of a Malamute puppy is available in JPG format only and may be downloaded from Pepakura Gallery. Photo instructions are included in the download. Build photos are by DeviantART member, MakenXXX. Other Alaskan dog breeds include the Husky and Klee Kai.

Loggerhead Turtle Papercraft

I believe this papercraft turtle was originally offered by the Hiwasa Chelonian Museum in Japan. The museum is dedicated to the loggerhead sea turtle. The papercraft was created for the museum by master designer Goto Kei. Although the museum no longer offers the turtle, it can still be downloaded from an Internet archive located here. Please be aware that after following the link, the download buttons for the PDF template and PDF instructions will be "invisible". Hover your cursor in the blank space to the left of the turtle's head and the buttons will appear. Loggerhead turtles may be found in oceans around the world. Build photo by Vermin King.

Asian Giant Hornet Papercraft

The actual size of an Asian giant hornet is about 2 inches (5 cm) long. It is the largest hornet in the world. This papercraft replica of the hornet is about 9.5 inches (24 cm) long, so you might call it a giant Asian giant hornet. :) The original Japanese website that offered this papercraft is long gone. However, the JPG template sheets for the hornet (along with instructions) are still available at this Internet archive. The giant Asian hornet is a serious threat to honey bees in the United States.

Shark Head Papercraft

This shark head is a little more realistic that your typical low poly papercraft wall hanging. However, as it is still composed of angular shapes, it makes for a relatively easy build. The finished model is around 20"(50 cm) high. If the model is considered to be life size, it would be close to the size of a small to medium sized shark. Papercraft Wolf Head

It is curious why so many papercraft designers have created what amounts to life size paper models of taxidermized animal heads. Now, many of the heads are "low poly" geometric representations, but others, like this wolf head by Paper Juke are quite realistic. I assume Juke used a 3D model from some video game as the basis of this papercraft. The Pepakura PDO template for the head may be downloaded here. The finished model is about 10" (26 cm) wide. 3D Papercraft Cicada Shell

Across the world, there are more than 3000 species of the insect known as the "cicada". Each of the species has a common feature: the nymphs shed their skins to emerge as winged adults. At the right time of the year you can find hundreds of their empty shells clinging to plants and trees. Just the thing for scaring your little sister! ;) This 3D papercraft cicada shell was created by a Japanese papercraft designer in 2008. The template for the model consists of 7 JPG images which may be downloaded here. There is a link on the download page to photo instructions showing how to build the model. The estimated length of the model is 12" (30 cm).

Pictured is a sampling of some of the paper models offered by Yamaha in their "Rare Animals of the World" papercraft series. The complete list of animals available include a tiger, a California condor, a great Indian rhinoceros, a gorilla, yellow-eyed penguins, an African elephant, and a coelacanth fish. Each of the templates comes in two versions: a "lines only" version meant to be printed on color cardstock and a color version meant to be printed on white cardstock.

Illusion Papercraft Collection

The folks at the education website, e*chalk, have a collection of papercraft illusions available for download. Sure, you know the illusion, the one where the character's head turns to follow you no matter where you move in the room. E*chalk calls their version of this trick "Swivel Heads". Four of the twelve illusions available are pictured. The ones not pictured are a cat, a fox, a dragon, a knight, a duck, a horse, a rooster and a skeleton. I wouldn't build too many of these.  The effect of a dozen pair of eyes following your every move can be kind of creepy! ;)

Papercraft Fish Series

Mikio Kajiwara is a professional papercraft designer. He is also a fisherman. For fun, in his spare time, he designs paper models of the fishes he loves. The four papercraft fishes pictured here (plus two more) are available for free from Kajiwara's website located here. Kajiwara's goal with these models is to make them as accurate to the real fish as possible, yet remain simple to build. I think he succeeded!

Year of the Ox Papercraft

In February, these papercraft oxen were created by artist, Aktuelle Beitrage to celebrate 2021, the Year of the Ox in the Chinese zodiac. There are six different oxen available: yellow, white, red, blue, black and a plain black one with no floral decorations.  The PDF template for each of the different oxen may be downloaded here. My favorite part of these paper toys are the birds! ^^

Papercraft Cicada

While this papercraft cicada may look like origami at first glance, it is actually a glue-less paper model (i.e. cutting is employed, in addition to folding). What is amazing about this model is its template contains just one piece. This single piece is cut out and then carefully folded to give the result in the photo. The printable template for the model was created by Fumito Nozaki and is available at the website located here. After following the link, click on the blue text under the photo to download the PDF. The template is black and white, so printing on color paper is required for the best results. The cicada in the photo was printed on metallic paper.

Great White Shark Papercraft

This papercraft depicts a moment frozen in time, when a great white shark rises violently from the water to snag a seal to eat. Not the most pleasant of events, but it makes for a cool paper model nonetheless. This model was created by DeviantART member Dr. WheelieMobile who based the design on a 3D model from the video game, Zoo Tycoon.  The JPG template for the model may be downloaded here. Japanese Emperor Butterfly Papercraft

The Japanese Emperor butterfly is found in every part of the main island of Japan. It is easily identified by its distinctive purple color. This paper model of the butterfly is offered by the Konica Minolta company on their website. Judging by the size of the template, it appears the finished model is slightly larger than life. The scientific name of the Japanese Emperor is "Sasakia Charonda".

Here's another set of papercraft animals based on 3D models from the Zoo Tycoon 2 video game. This time we have a male and a female lion. The templates for the lions are in JPG format and may be downloaded from DrWheelieMobile's DeviantART page here. A little known fact about male lions is that their mane darkens with age. So the darker the mane, the older the lion.

Several years ago Canon Creative Park released a Santa Claus papercraft set complete with sleigh, Christmas presents, and a reindeer. Recently, Canon released a new mini version of the papercraft where the reindeer is flying instead of walking like in the previous, larger version. Fantastic Beasts Papercraft: Niffler

In the Fantastic Beasts movies there are magical creatures known as "nifflers". Some describe the appearance of nifflers as a cross between a duck-billed platypus, a mole, and a beaver. Newt Scamander, the protagonist of the movies, notes in his book on fantastic beasts that:

"The niffler is a British beast. Fluffy, black and long-snouted, this burrowing creature has a predilection for anything glittery. Nifflers are often kept by goblins to burrow deep into the earth for treasure. Though the niffler is gentle and even affectionate, it can be destructive to belongings and should never be kept in a house."
