G1 Dinobot Papercraft: Grimlock

In the Transformers universe, there are the Dinobots who transform, not into cars and trucks, but into dinosaurs. The leader of the Dinobots is Grimlock who transforms into a Tyrannosaurus Rex. This Grimlock papercraft by PJ Excelero Papercraft has templates available in both PDF and Pepakura PDO format, all of which is available for download here. The finished model stands about 12" (30 cm) tall.

Zoids Zi-024 Command Wolf Papercraft

This Zoids Zi-024 Command Wolf papercraft has one of those templates that is incredibly difficult to build, but produces an excellent model if you have the skills to pull it off. Created by Pendragon's Papercraft, the papercraft download includes two untextured Pepakura PDO files for the instructions (open with Pepakura Viewer only) and color PDF files for the printable templates. The finished model is rather large, coming in at around 25.4" (64.5 cm) long. The Zi-024 Command Wolf was featured in the Zoids: Chaotic Century anime. It is also referred to as the "Irvine Custom."

SD Mini Gundam Papercraft

I thought these "super deformed" mini Gundam papercraft were super cute. Pictured are the RGE-B790WC Genoace Custom and the RGE-B790 Genoace.  The models are about 2" (5 cm) tall when complete. Super Armor Baymax Papercraft

Baymax is an inflatable robot featured in the 2014 Disney 3D animated movie, Big Hero 6. The papercraft pictured shows Baymax in his red "Super Armor" which includes, among other things, thrusters and wings. This paper model was created by Cubee 2.0 Papercraft. The Pepakura PDO template for the model may be downloaded here: MediaFire. There are three separate PDO files in the download: one for the body and two more for the arms, legs, and wings. The finished model is about 15" (38 cm) tall.

For several years, one the best places to find free Stars Wars papercraft was the Noturno Sukhoi papercraft blog. Sadly, nothing has been released on the blog since 2016. Fear not! Much of their Star Wars papercraft is still available for download. The template for this commando droid paper model may be downloaded on MediaFire. The download includes both PDF and Pepakura PDO format templates. Commando droids first appeared on the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated television show in 2008.

Robot Santa Paper Toy

Interstellar Papercraft: TARS & CASE Robots

When I watched the science fiction movie, Interstellar, I was fascinated by the unusual rectangular robots that are part of the story. The robots' names are "TARS" and "CASE". Despite their awkward rectangular shapes, the robots turn out to be surprisingly agile. Dragon Ball Z Papercraft: Mosco

I must admit my ignorance. I never knew there were any robots in the Dragon Ball Z franchise! Apparently, there are more than a few. This colorful paper model depicts the robot named "Mosco". As there is a pilot inside, calling Mosco a robot is something of a misnomer. The pilot is a small impish being known as "Mule". Mule pilots the mechanical suit from inside the belly where he can see out through a small window. PDF and Pepakura PDO templates for this papercraft may be downloaded at the JAV-Papercraft website.

Zoids Liger Zero Papercraft

Liger Zero has a long history in the Zoids franchise. The Hasbro company produced snap-together plastic model kits of Liger Zero in 1999. He is the central character in two different anime series: Zoids: New Century (2001) and Zoids: Fuzors (2004).  This papercraft Liger Zero was created by Paperzero Papercraft. Video instructions and the PDF template may be found here. Liger Zero's signature attack is "Strike Laser Claw".

G1 Transformers Papercraft: Devastator

In the Transformers universe, Devastator is an enormous Decepticon formed by combining the Constructicons. The Constructicons are robots that transform from construction equipment such as a bulldozer and a concrete mixer truck. The six Constructicons that make up Devastator are Bonecrusher, Hook, Long Haul, Mixmaster, Scavenger, and Scrapper (who is the leader). Chibi Gundam Papercraft

I must say, these are the cutest Gundam paper models I have come across. The larger figures are only 5 cm tall. Unlike most 3D papercraft, these models are constructed using color cardstock rather than printing the colors with ink on white cardstock. The PDF template for the models may be downloaded at WXY Paper. Visual instructions are included.  The Gundam franchise began in 1979 with the release of the Mobile Suit Gundam anime.

Zoids Shield Liger Papercraft

The Shield Liger is one of the many robotic animals in the Zoids franchise which includes anime, manga, and video games. The Shield Liger is so named because it has a protective energy shield in its "mane". This paper model of the Liger was created by Pendragon's Papercraft and may be downloaded here. The finished model stands approximately 6" (15 cm) tall. This type of Zoid also goes by the designation "RZ-007".

G1 Transformers Papercraft: Bumblebee

In most of the Transformers movies released to date, the robot character Bumblebee has the ability to convert into a yellow Chevy Camaro. However, in the 2018 Bumblebee movie, the title character is shown transforming into a yellow Volkswagen Beetle instead. This switch to a VW was a deliberate nod to the Generation 1 Transformers Bumblebee toy which also transformed into a Beetle. This G1 Bumblebee papercraft was created by Tosanaji Prakoso and KM Shofaun. Both PDF and Pepakura PDO templates for the model may be downloaded here. Generation 1 Transformers toys were produced by Hasbro Company in the late 80's.

Paper model designer Masayu-i has graciously released this miniature Zoids Command Wolf as a craft activity for people to do while under quarantine during the COVID-19 pandemic. The finished model is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand! The template download and photo instructions may be found on Masayu-i's blog here. Zoids began in the 80's as a toy line of robotic animals which has grown over the years into a franchise that includes not only toys but also video games, anime, and manga.

RX-78-2 Gundam Paper Model

The RX-78-2 is the original mech that started the Gundam franchise. Its first appearance was in the 1979 anime series, Mobile Suit Gundam. In the series, the giant robot is piloted by a teenage mechanic, Amuro Ray. This paper model of the RX-78-2 was designed by Juancho Aran. The best method of building this model is by printing the parts on different colors of cardstock. The finished size of the model is about 16" (40 cm) tall. Real Steel Noisy Boy Robot Papercraft

The 2011 movie Real Steel features giant fighting robots. The protagonist robot in the film is a blue Japanese-built robot named "Noisy Boy". Before the movie premiered, two free paper models of Noisy Boy were released as a promotion. One model was a simplified, easy-to-build version (pictured on the right) and the other was a more detailed version (pictured on the left). Transforming G1 Optimus Prime Papercraft

This papercraft Optimus Prime is ultra pose-able when in robot form and may be transformed into Optimus' semi-trailer truck form. The transformation is made possible by using string or rubber bands at the model's joints. This papercraft was created by Paper Robots, which apparently no longer exists, but a copy of the printable template is still available here. Sorry, there are no instructions on how to transform from robot to vehicle mode. I think you can figure it out, though. ;)

G1 Transformers Papercraft: Laserbeak

This delightfully cartoon-ish paper model of the G1 Decepticon Laserbeak was created by Asd Fla. The PNG template for this papercraft may be downloaded here. In the Transformers universe, Laserbeak is a Decepticon spy who transforms from a cassette tape into a bird-like fighter jet with laser cannons. The group of Decepticons that transform from cassettes into various robot animals are also known as "Recordicons".

Papercraft Miniature Gaming Mecha

This papercraft mecha was created with miniature gaming in mind, however it also makes a nice paper toy for desktop display. The official name of the mecha is the "MQ-3A Murphy". It is part of a collection of free papercraft tanks, vehicles, gun turrets and bunkers offered by Ebbles Miniatures. PDF templates for each piece in the collection may be downloaded here.

Star Wars BB-9E Paper Model

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is set to be released on December 15th.  Not surprisingly, papercraft related to the movie is already being released. This paper model is of BB-9E, a New Order astromech droid of the same class as BB-8, the lovable droid who appeared in the previous movie, The Force Awakens. A download of the papercraft template for this model, along with video instructions, may be found here. The model may be modified into a fun desktop toy by adding a coin inside during construction. The weight of the coin then allows the droid to wobble back and forth without falling over.
