RPG Crystal Papercraft

I'm always on the lookout for easy tabletop gaming props. This crystal is a good one! Officially this model is an "Elven Crystal," but it will work in different types of gaming scenarios, not just Fantasy. This model is part of the Lord Zsezse Works collection of Elven Papercraft which was part of a 2015 Kickstarter project. The template for the crystal is currently available as a "pay what you want" item on Drivethru RPG. The model includes both the crystal and the base. The PDF template is customizable with three different base materials and five different crystal colors. The finished model is 2.8" (7 cm) tall.

Pop-up Origami Angels

These origami angels from David Brill can be folded to be either free standing figures or greeting card pop-ups. The folding pattern for the angel is a modification of a "Christmas fairy" origami. PDF Folding diagrams of both the angel and the Christmas fairy may be downloaded from David's website located here. Also available from David is a video tutorial showing how to fold both versions of the angel.

Ghost of a Tale Papercraft

Every so often, the creators of the Ghost of a Tale video game will post a free paper model of a character from the game. Two models have been released to date: Tilos, a minstrel mouse and Kerold Redwhiskers, a pirate frog. Printable PDF templates for both models may be downloaded here. Ghost of a Tale was partially inspired by the Redwall novel series by Brian Jacques, which like the game features anthropomorphic animals in a fantasy world with a medieval flavor.

Fantasy Castle Paper Model

Mike vom Mars used Cinema4D 3D modeling software to create a make-believe medieval castle. He then exported the model to Pepakura Designer and created a papercraft template. Pictured is a photo of the finished paper model with some grass and trees added for effect. Mike admits the architecture of the model is an odd mixture of styles seeing how he added a dome which was rarely used in the Middle Ages. Rustic Cottage Papercraft

This is my papercraft release for the month of August: a rustic cottage. I don't remember where I got the 3D model this is based on, but I have had it for a long time. I originally downloaded it to practice creating papercraft templates when I first started the hobby. The finished model is 1:48 scale, the same as Lego mini-figures and "O" scale model railroads. It might be used for miniature gaming, but it is at an odd scale for that purpose. The single page PDF template for the model may be downloaded here. Due to its small size, this model may not be suitable for beginners (I have the roof in mind). If you want an easier-to-build model, for the roof use only the piece with the red shingles, trimming away the fascia boards.  The two soffit pieces then may either be discarded or glued to the back of the shingles.

2.5D Chinese Dragon Papercraft

In Chinese mythology, the Azure Dragon (Qinglong) symbolizes the cardinal direction east. By extension, the Qinglong also represents the season of spring. This 2.5D papercraft Azure Dragon was created for use in miniature gaming by papercraft designer, Eddnic. The printable PDF file for the model may be downloaded here. Sorry to say, there are no instructions for this model. Your best guide is the photo shown.

Miniature Papercraft Fantasy Castle

The template for this miniature papercraft castle originally appeared in the June 1984 issue of Dragon Magazine, a publication dedicated to the subject of role playing games. The official name of the castle is "The High Keep of the Grand Chapter of the Order of St. Raphael". However, to keep things short it was given the nickname "Great Stoney". Little Prince Paper Toy

The Little Prince is one of the most beloved children's books of the twentieth century. Over the years since its publication in 1943, the novella has been adapted to movies, television shows, radio plays, and even ballet. This fan art Little Prince paper toy by smilerobinson captures the sweetness of the original illustrations in the book. The template for the toy is available here.

Papercraft Elf Architecture

This paper model of elven architecture is a free sample from Lord Zsezse Works, a company that produces printable papercraft for miniature gaming. The formal title of the piece is "Eledriel's Cloister". The model has a strong "Lord of the Rings" feel to it and the creator of the piece undoubtedly had "The Mirror of Galadriel" in mind when designing it. Inside the cloister are rock benches and a fountain.  If a free standing fountain is desired,the base of the model is removable. PDF files for the model may be downloaded here.

Fire Wyvern Origami

Wyverns often appear in English, Scottish, and Irish heraldry. The technical definition of a wyvern is "a winged two-legged dragon with a barbed tail". This origami wyvern was folded from a single 12" square of paper by DeviantART member, Cahoonas. I especially like the design of the wings! The crease pattern for the wyvern can be found here.

Sandman Paper Toys

Neil Gaiman's influential comic book series, The Sandman, introduced many memorable characters. One such character is the protagonist of the series, Dream. Dream and his six siblings are personifications of seven different universal concepts that all begin with the letter "D". These paper toys of Dream and his sister, Death, were created by Nacci, a Sandman fan who is also an illustrator.  Printable templates for the toys may be downloaded from Nacci's website, Fanzineria. The original Sandman series was published from January 1989 to March 1996 under DC Comics' Vertigo imprint.

Vintage 1912 Fairy Tale Paper Dolls

This Prince Charming paper doll is one of several fairy tale characters featured in a postcard series from 1912. The idea is simple: each postcard has one paper doll with two sets of costumes to wear. The costumes allow the doll to transform into an entirely different fairy tale character. So Prince Charming can become the Frog Prince and also Jack the Giant Killer. Six different postcards from the series may be viewed at Dedree Drees Flickr album here.

Papercraft Gnomes

This plethora of gnomes, or I should say "snorfs", is the creation of Maarten Janssens at 3EyedBear. There are fifteen different snorfs in all, each with a unique name. Click on the image of the snorf that you want here to download its PDF template.

Vintage Wizard of Oz Paper Masks

These paper masks of Wizard of Oz characters were released as promotional items in 1939 by Loew's Incorporated. Loew's was the parent company of MGM, the studio that produced the original Oz movie. The masks pictured are the Scarecrow, Dorothy, a winged monkey, the Cowardly Lion, the Wizard of Oz, and the Tin Woodsman. Mermaid Papercraft

The Little Mermaid in Hans Christian Anderson's version of the story gains human legs but feels excruciating pain each time she walks. Later, the prince she loves marries another and the little mermaid dies brokenhearted. Quite a bit different from Disney's version, eh? ;) This free papercraft by the Mochinuki Printing Company tries to capture some of the sorrrow of the original tale. Fantasy Papercraft: Lich

Destro2k at DeviantART has created an exquisitely detailed paper model of a lich. In fantasy literature a lich is an undead creature that, unlike a zombie, retains the intelligence it had as a living thing. This papercraft is based on an original 3D model by DeviantARTist FirstKeeper and not a model ripped from a video game. The Pepakura PDO files for this paper model may be downloaded here.

LOTR Papercraft: Legolas Elf Sword

In the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy, the elf Legolas carried two swords on his back. Given the popularity of the character, I figured it was only a matter of time before someone created paper models of Legolas' swords (or "fighting knives" as some like to call them). RPG Papercraft: Blue Dragon

Here's another great miniature gaming papercraft designed by Eddnic. This blue dragon is a good illustration of Eddnic's 2.5D paper model work which is so well developed that it could be considered true 3D papercraft (or at least 2.7D ^^). A download of the blue dragon template is available here.

Harry Potter Papercraft: Harry, Hermione and Ron

These Harry Potter paper models are the creation of Noturno Sukoi. 3D models from the "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" video game were used as the basis of the papercraft figures. The models include Harry Potter himself, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley. When complete, each of the models stands around 15 3/4" (40 cm) tall. As is typical with much of Noturno's work, these papercraft models are recommended for experienced papercrafters only as customization of some pieces may be required in order to get the models to fit together properly. Templates are available in both PDF and PDO format and may be downloaded here.

Life-Size S.U.N. MMORPG Papercraft

How would you like this paper model (no pun intended) standing in the corner of your room? ;) The creation of papercrafter "Moonman", this awesome full scale papercraft is based on a 3D computer model from the fantasy themed MMORPG, Soul of the Ultimate Nation (S.U.N.) The character depicted is an "Elementalist", which is a class of character described in the game as "offspring of a mage group which has compiled magic books based on the four elements of water, wind, fire and earth". The finished model stands 5'-6" (168 cm) tall with a template consisting of 58 pages. The template comes in both JPG and Pepakura PDO format and may be downloaded here.

UPDATE 10/17/2011: A version of the template sized for letter size paper is available here. The download is a single PDF file containing all 58 pages of the template. Be aware that a model built using this template will be slightly smaller than the A4 version due to the resizing required to fit to letter size paper.
